Ho, ho, ho. No, the Godfather isn’t back. It’s Christmas time! Whether you’re 3 or 30 everyone has a Christmas Wish. Some wish for peace on Earth. Others wish for a new car. Some wish for a Daniel Bryan WWE World Heavyweight Championship run. Wait, what? It’s probably not a common wish but if you’re a WWE fan that’s something you may wish for. In the spirit of the Holiday Season I’m here to present to you My WWE Christmas Wish List. I’ve been a good boy all year and maybe, just maybe Santa McMahon will make some of my wishes come true.
I’m going to list five things that I want to see happen in WWE in 2014. These necessarily aren’t things I think will happen but things that will make me happy as a fan to see. That’s why it’s my Christmas Wish List. Ready?
1. Hulk Hogan drops the Big Leg at WrestleMania XXX
About two months ago, I wrote a column called “Come Home, Hulk” in which I pretty much yearn for one more Hogan run in the WWE. It’s really hard to get me to “mark out” at my age but if I heard “Real American” blasting over the speakers at the SuperDome I’d probably jump through the roof. I think instead of having Hogan in a match where he’s on RAW a few times before the PPV, I’d rather his appearance be unannounced like it was at WrestleMania 21. He can come out and save a midcard babyface from The Real Americans. That alone would be awesome but if he could muster it, I’d completely “mark out” to see him drop the Big Leg just one more time.
2. Shawn Michaels wrestles Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania XXX
My first two wishes are geared towards WrestleMania and that’s because if I could control one WWE PPV, I’d want it to be WrestleMania. It’s the biggest show of the year and you want it to be as awesome as possible. That’s why having Shawn Michaels come out of retirement to face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania is one of my wishes. We all know the back story of Michaels training Bryan so you all ready have the “teacher vs. student” thing going. Then you add in the fact that HBK cost Bryan the WWE Title in October and you have Bryan wanting revenge against his mentor. I don’t know if Michaels even wants to wrestle again but if he did you know he wouldn’t come back if he still didn’t have “it”. If you combine the back story with Michaels’ big match ability and the fact he’ll be taking on probably the best wrestler in WWE today, you’d have a classic on your hands.
3. Daniel Bryan wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on RAW the night after WrestleMania XXX
The RAW after WrestleMania has become an event itself. We all saw how amazing the crowd reacted when Dolph Ziggler cashed in the Money in the Bank contract to take the World Heavyweight Championship from Alberto Del Rio after this year’s WrestleMania. I can only imagine the ovation after he wins a long, hard fought battle for the title after next year’s show. I think it would be the perfect timing because if he does face HBK he’ll go over and how much more could you put a guy over than by having him beat a Hall of Famer at WrestleMania and then win the Championship just 24 hours later. I know some want Bryan to win the Royal Rumble and then the title at WrestleMania, but I think there’s so much more satisfaction and entertainment if he faces Michaels at WrestleMania and then wins the title on RAW. It would create an all-time great RAW moment in the process. It’s good to change the title once in a while on RAW. It gives the fans the perception that it can happen on TV. Bryan had a career year in 2013 and he deserves more than two horrendously short title reigns and since this is my Christmas Wish, this is how I hope it goes down.
4. Triple H loses to CM Punk at the Royal Rumble and then CM Punk goes on to win the Royal Rumble
I’m cheating here and throwing in two wishes in one. Sue me. It’s my column. Punk has been jabbing at Triple H for a few weeks on TV and there needs to be a payoff. That payoff needs to be a big match between the two at the Royal Rumble. Punk needs to go over and go over decidedly. The one problem I have with The Authority is that no one ever gets over on them. If you look back at The Corporation when Vince McMahon was the heel authority figure he would routinely get beat up by the guys he was antagonizing. That’s what you need to tell a great story. Triple H needs to check his ego at the door and let CM Punk beat him at the Royal Rumble. Triple H will always be Triple H whether he wins another match or not. He needs to do “what’s best for business” and get what’s coming to him. The fans want to see it. I’m still mad at him that he wasted 60% of Brock Lesnar’s matches. Think of how much better WrestleMania 29 would have been if Lesnar had a much better opponent than Triple H. They just didn’t click. We saw that at SummerSlam. Then after they didn’t click again, they had one more match. That’s Triple H’s ego in all it’s glory. Hunter, swallow your pride and realize what’s best for your company.
The second part to this wish is that after Punk beats Triple H he goes on to win the Royal Rumble and main event WrestleMania XXX. You can’t convince me that he doesn’t deserve that honor. It’s something he’s said he wants to do and that he doesn’t want to wrestle much longer. There may not be another time to do this. Even if he wins the title at WrestleMania, I’d still want him to drop it to Bryan the following night. I don’t know Punk but I doubt he’d have a problem with a 24 hour title reign to put over his friend.
5. Dump the Money in the Bank PPV and bring back the King of the Ring
With WWE unifying the World Titles there’s really no need to have a separate Money in the Bank PPV. The show was being carried by two Ladder Matches and only having one may cause the show to lose some luster. The Money in the Bank Ladder Match belongs at WrestleMania. It was a special attraction that fans looked forward at WrestleMania and it would be great to see it back where it originated.
WWE’s going to need a July PPV to fill the void then, so let’s bring back the King of the Ring. It is one of the most commonly requested things I see fans asking for and I think it would be a great event if brought back and marketed right. Why is March Madness so popular? It isn’t the basketball. It’s the brackets. Everyone loves to fill out a bracket. Make the tournament a month long thing. Have 32 wrestlers in the tournament and even have them seeded 1-32. The first few rounds would occur on RAW and SmackDown and then when we get down to 8, the rest of the tournament occurs at the PPV. The winner of the tournament gets a WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match at SummerSlam. It’s a fun event and one that can set up the Main Event of your second biggest show.
Are any of the things I wrote about going to happen? I have no idea. That’s why they are my Christmas wishes. I asked for some WWE Christmas Wishes on Facebook and Twitter and here are some of the responses I got.
Phil Pochatko “My Christmas wish is for someone completely unexpected to win the rumble...Goldust would be awesome eliminating Dean Ambrose and his brother inadvertently on his way to throwing Daniel Bryan out and turning heel all in the same rumble. Would need to enter at like number 5 though. Too much?
@JJFTweets “My wish would be to have Joey Styles back on commentary for Monday Night Raw. The commentary now is so distracting from the matches and Styles is the best in the business, besides the retired Jim Ross.”
@SimonLarge08 “One of the things which would be top of any WWE Christmas Wish I had would be for the WWE to really build someone new at the rumble. Give somebody like Roman Reigns the chance to shine and really sow the seeds leading up to WrestleMania for an awesome pay off to The Shield angle where they split.”
@Robster2206 “I wish WWE would make CM Punk v Daniel Bryan the main event of WrestleMania.”
Daniel Naylor “This may be completely random and certainly would never happen but I'd like to turn on RAW and have Bobby Roode come to the ring.”
This is my final column of 2013. I need to take off the rest of the year to recharge the batteries and enjoy the Holidays. I want to take this time to wish everyone here a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I also want to thank everyone that reads my work for their support. Knowing there are people out there that enjoy my half coherent ramblings makes it all worthwhile, so thank you. I’ll be back in early 2014 (it’s really only two weeks) so until then, enjoy all the other great writers here on TJR. We all appreciate your support. Have a great Holiday season.
(That’s what she said.)
