Wednesday Headlines: WWE Announces Kane Will Star in See No Evil 2
I have never been the type of guy to be excited about any WWE movie project, but at least with this announcement I have some mild interest. Why? Because WWE has announced that they will release See No Evil 2 starring Kane. There's a WWE.com story about it. It was also on Variety, which is a bigger deal because it's one of the top movie news sites out there. Perhaps it's the biggest. I really don't know.
Anyway, here's some info from the Variety piece by Marc Graser about See No Evil 2.
WWE Studios is bringing “See No Evil” back to life, producing a sequel with Lionsgate to the horror film that will again star wrestler Kane as a psychopath that goes on a killing spree.
“See No Evil” was the first film that WWE produced through its film division, and went on to earn $19 million worldwide when it was released in 2006 — its biggest hit until this year’s Halle Berry thriller “The Call,” which generated $52 million to date.
Production on “See No Evil 2″ will start in the fall, with identical twin helmers the Soska Sisters Jen and Sylvia (“American Mary”) set to direct. They are also among the directors that will contribute to the anthology series “ABCs of Death 2.” The duo captured the attention of the film biz with their low-budget indie “Dead Hooker in a Trunk” in 2009.
Kane will return as the reclusive madman Jacob Goodnight, who rises from the dead in the city morgue after his killing spree at the Blackwell hotel and goes after a group of medical students who fight to survive. Nathan Brookes and Bobby Lee Darby are co-writing the script.
You see that part about "earning $19 million" for WWE studios? That's rare. WWE Films usually don't make money. The Call isn't their film really. They put some money and got some money out of it, but it was not necessarily their film. See No Evil was the most successful WWE produced film ever. I'm not sure why it took them seven years to do a sequel considering they have done sequels for other films that didn't do nearly as well.
Also I love how Kane's character is Jacob Goodnight. It's the perfect kind of name for a cheesy horror flick. I saw the first one on cable TV years ago and it was fine for its genre. If you go into it ready to laugh at how silly some of it is then you can really enjoy that kind of film. Now he's going to go after medical students? Great. Nobody likes those nerds!
What does this mean for Kane's WWE character? He'll probably be written out of storylines for a couple of months in September/October or whenever the filming occurs. In other words, pencil in a Bray Wyatt win at SummerSlam and a possible injury angle to explain Kane's absence soon after.
As I'm sure many have likely joked about already, hopefully the release for this film is May 19th. I looked it up and that falls on a Monday next year. Most movies are released on a Friday. Straight to DVD films are on Tuesdays. No word on when this one would be. It's too early to tell.
I'm happy for Kane. I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying that he's one of the better actors in WWE. When he didn't have the mask on his facial expressions were always great. With the mask on he's still very good at it.
IN OTHER NEWS
- The ratings for WWE Total Divas on E! Network are in and they are up in week two. Sunday's episode drew 1.53 million viewers while the debut episode a week prior did 1.3 million viewers. (WrestlingINC) They also sent out a press release bragging about all the great numbers with certain demographics, which was more annoying than when the Bella Twins try to make jokes. The ratings news likely means that E! is happy with WWE and it could mean to future "reality shows" in the future. It's more exposure for WWE, so good for them.
I have watched both episodes of Total Divas. The main reason is that I want to support Natalya, but at the same time if you go into it knowing you're going to watch a scripted reality show that's silly then it makes it tolerable. Plus, the women are nice to look at. That's a plus.
Whether you watch or not you should check out Matt Seagull's reviews of the show here on TJR because they are very entertaining to read. His breakdown of the over the top heel character of Eva Marie is silly just because he spent so many words trying to explain it. Poor Matt. He volunteered to do it! I didn't even ask.
- Hulk Hogan appeared on the Today Show on NBC this morning because one of their hosts, Willie Geist, is a huge fan of his. I have no idea who Willie Geist is, but I doubt he cares because he has no idea who I am too. Damn you Willie! They surprised him by bringing Hogan onto the set. The Hulkster gave out some t-shirts, did some posing, mentioned he was 60 years old (on August 11) and he did a classic promo full of yelling. You can watch it all right here if you like.
Number of times Hulk mentioned TNA Impact Wrestling? Zero. Number of times he mentioned that sex tape of his? Zero. Number of times he said "brother"? 50. I rounded up.
- John Cena is one of the worst WWE people to follow on Twitter because he rarely says anything insightful. This time he updated us on his injury status. If you saw Raw you saw when he mentioned an elbow injury. It looked puffy. When he wrestled in the main event (he barely did anything in it), he had it taped up. Here's what he had to say.
If you click on the link the a reply on there says: "punch on my vagina so hard." Oh, how sweet. Must be a career woman. Get better, champ.
- Speaking of the WWE Champion, this isn't really news, but it's pretty rare. The nerds over at WWE.com thought it would be photo to edit a John Cena photo to see what he would look like with long hair and facial hair.
I don't know who he looks like with the hair and beard like that, but I'm thinking a little bit like Tom Hanks in Cast Away when he's alone on that island. Maybe we should ask the "punch on my vagina" chick what she thinks. Maybe not.
I'll be back with my 20 Questions & Answers about SummerSlam column likely on Thursday at some point. I should have time on Wednesday to write it. Until then, make sure you're reading everything here on TJRWrestling.com and head on over to TJRSports.com because we're adding new content every day there too.
