Aleister Black on NXT: The black and gold brand… it was just the pinnacle of what professional wrestling could be. The former NXT Champion has opened up on the past when it was all very different during a new interview, and we are sure there’ll be many fans who would love to go back in time. For Black, these years between 2015 and today are something special in the industry. He feels that era set a standard few promotions could match.

Black’s NXT Beginnings

Now firmly established as a veteran in WWE during his second run with the company, Black first arrived on the scene through NXT. His early WWE career unfolded during the black and gold era, a time known for intense matches and creative freedom. That environment helped shape his style and reputation. According to Black, the brand’s identity was built on passion and balance.

Why NXT Stood Out

Speaking to Popternative, Aleister Black explained why he holds that era in such high regard. He acknowledged that opinions may differ, but his belief remains strong. Black said, “I think that the good thing about Black and Gold, that era, and people can debate me on this all they want. I think at the time, I want to say that the 2016 to 2020 era of professional wrestling, maybe even 2015 to 2020, because I want to be fair to all the people that made it that way, and it was certainly not me. You know, I think we were the best wrestling in the world. I think we had a perfect blend of the old school and implementing it into the new school.”
Black emphasized that the success of the black and gold NXT was a collective effort. He credited the roster, producers, and creative vision that allowed talent to thrive. The mix of traditional storytelling and modern athleticism defined the brand. That formula resonated strongly with fans around the world.

Early Wrestling Influences

Elsewhere in the same interview, Black also spoke about his influences growing up as a wrestling fan. He named the Japanese legend Hayabusa as one of his early favorites. “It was what Hayabusa did and looked like that blew my mind,” Black said. Those influences can still be found in his work today.
