Chad Gable Reflects On Advice From Randy Orton

Wrestling Lessons Take Time To Understand

There are many great things to learn in pro wrestling that don’t go immediately to the head. They can practice with a player for years and eventually, when the time comes, they will truly be able to relate what they learned by simply sitting with a player to what they actually experienced. Chad Gable recently confessed it took him almost ten years to truly sink in information he was given by Randy Orton. The star explained that he had been encouraged for a long time by Orton to know what is truly required during a match and what can be thrown out. The message was heard years ago by Gable, but it took time, maturity and plenty of experience within the squared circle to turn it into a success.

Orton Teaches The Value Of Restraint

In an interview with Complex Graps, Gable spoke about his head game evolving with time. He doesn’t want to cram too much into a single act and has a new appreciation for the importance of timing. It’s a psychology that’s very similar in its approach to Orton’s all too infamous out of ring psychology. Over the decades, Orton has competed in WWE’s biggest ranks, winning fourteen world championships. In fact, his iconic style has not had to rely on constant high-speed movements. Rather, his matches have been unique and timeless thanks to the precise timing, slow pace, facial expression, and judicious offensive tactics.

Undertaker Inspires Authentic In-Ring Aggression

A wwe wrestler dressed as the undertaker character stands in the ring holding a microphone close to his mouth with a black leather gloved hand. He wears a wide-brimmed black hat, has long dark hair, a goatee, and is dressed in an open black leather coat with a bare chest. His expression is intense and menacing. A blurred arena crowd is visible in the blue-lit background.

Gable also disclosed that The Undertaker had some counsel that impacted another side of his presentation entirely. Speaking about his time in AAA, Gable remembered he was encouraged to “take some of the real passion out of his wrestling career and put it into his show. In particular, that was a good one to make, given Gable’s history prior to signing with WWE. He was one of the most notable competitors in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2012 Olympic Games for the USA, and has a real gladiatorial history that not many of the other athletes on the roster can rival. Gable admitted he wasn’t always letting that raw, aggressive edge in his TV persona shine through.

Combined Veteran Advice Shapes Future Success

Ultimately, he said, the guidance of the Undertaker helped him to realize that harnessing his instincts could make his performances more authentic. What is interesting is that both veteran coaches’ tips complement each other. Orton‘s lesson was: Less is more, discipline is important, and restraint is important. In the meantime, The Undertaker teased Gable into showing more of his competitive side to the crowd. The lessons he’s learning at this point in his career may be game-changers for Gable in the future.
