LA Knight Reflects On WWE Debut
The former United States Champion, LA Knight, has emerged as one of WWE’s most popular stars, but recently he admitted that one part of his career nearly made him fear the worst. Knight began his days on WWE’s main roster in 2022 as Max Dupri before becoming one of the biggest crowd favorites. He became the manager of the Maximum Male Models, which was very different from his success in NXT.
Max Dupri Gimmick Created Doubts
During a Now segment interview with Sam Roberts and Megan Morant at Fanatics Fest, Knight spoke about that time and couldn’t hold back his thoughts on the gimmick. “The level of torture mentally that was for those few months where it’s like, ‘Alright, I did this thing that brought me to the dance, undeniably; now you want me just to tuck it away over here? Logical and so. Yeah, we’ll do that. You’re gonna pay me what? ‘OK, let’s think about it.
Knight Feared Career Was Over

Knight said he was “very concerned about the trajectory of his career” when he made the decision. He felt the character was hurting his momentum and that it may actually end up hurting him for life in WWE. “But at the same time I’m still thinking, ‘Alright, this is career suicide.’ This is torpedoing me, and I’m dead in the water at this point.”
Returning To His Real Character
Luckily for Knight, WWE eventually allowed him to come back to that role that fans took to heart. The change paid off with a sudden surge of popularity, with the phrase ‘YEAH!’ becoming one of the most popular chants in the company. However, when the chance came up – All right, wait a minute, I can go back, and I can do me my way? Let’s do that; that’s what we did.
From Max Dupri To Stardom
Knight also attributed that decision to what has transpired since. “All of you here today all got where you’re at here today because I had that opportunity, that chance, that opportunity to come out and do what I do, my way. Now, LA Knight is one of the top stars on the line-up for SummerSlam. He is currently set to take on The Bloodline in a big-time tag team action with Royce Keys and Solo Sikoa. It has been one of WWE’s greatest success stories of recent years as he made the transition from Max Dupri to fan favourite.
