WWE Makes Big New ESPN Change That Could Shock Fans

WWE Expands Partnership With ESPN

WWE’s partnership with ESPN continues to evolve, as new reports reveal that the network has already discussed a significant change to the presentation of Premium Live Events. “Since last September, WWE has moved its domestic streaming rights from Peacock to ESPN Unlimited and changed its approach to better serve fans.”

Premium Live Events Move to New Streaming Format

Meanwhile, those premium events are still available for international fans on Netflix. In early 2024, ESPN began to air the first two matches of WWE Premium Live Events on regular cable channels, while the rest of the action was exclusive to ESPN+ subscribers.

ESPN Pushes WWE for Major Broadcast Change

“WWE used this model for several marquee matches throughout the year, including WrestleMania 42, giving viewers a preview before they invested in the premium experience.” Nevertheless, it appears that ESPN has requested a shift in this approach.

“According to WrestleVotes Radio, ESPN asked WWE to provide more exclusive content for viewers behind the paywall after the initial free airing.” Up until Night of Champions, it was standard for most WWE Premium Live Events (outside the big four) to contain five matches.

SummerSlam 2026 Card Starts Taking Shape

After the changes at Night of Champions, WWE aired two matches on free TV, whereas four fights were exclusively available for ESPN+ subscribers. It is expected that SummerSlam 2026, set for August 1 and 2 in Minneapolis, will see a big shift in WWE this year. Iyo Sky won the Queen of the Ring and became the first woman to challenge for the championship in the Women’s Royal Rumble match, demanding a fight against Liv Morgan.

Major WWE Storylines Build Toward SummerSlam

However, Oba Femi declined the opportunity to battle for the world title against Brock Lesnar in Hell in a Cell. Seth Rollins announced an open war against Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship. Meanwhile, Sami Zayn was astonished to defeat Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship. These developments have placed SummerSlam 2026 at the top of WWE’s 2026 events.
