WWE Starts New Netflix Era in Japan This October

WWE Expands Netflix Deal To Japan

WWE‘s gigantic worldwide deal with Netflix is expanding into a new market. The company announced big news this Monday night at RAW. Netflix is set to be the only place to watch its weekly shows in Japan. The official start of the transition takes place Oct. 1, 2026. With this step, WWE’s newfound focus on streaming all WWE content worldwide to one platform comes across as even more aggressive. The upcoming change will occur right after WWE’s current deal with ABEMA expires in the end of September.

Transition Follows Ending ABEMA Partnership

WWE has been able to successfully run its programming in Japan with a solid three-year agreement with ABEMA. But Japanese fans are soon moving to a new destination. Apple will step aside next month with Netflix, and viewers shouldn’t be left without the weekly viewing option for too long. The news was exciting and came while they were at RAW. It came off a chaotic Triple Threat Match that was fought for a spot in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. WWE also had a official promo logo on the screen.

Weekly Brands Head To Streaming

The logos of RAW, SmackDown and NXT were appearing side by side on the graphic. This clearly implies that the company has plans to stream all three of the big weekly brands in Japan. It’s a reminder of the speed at which WWE’s global streaming plan has shifted. Netflix, which has over the last year become the main destination for RAW, SmackDown and NXT on a number of key international markets, is now a central channel for these three shows. It also has significant Premium Live Events, such as WrestleMania and SummerSlam, broadcast in many areas.

Global Strategy Yields Strong Results

More significantly, the partnership seems to be getting the result both sides desired. Recently, one of the top executives of Netflix said that “WWE has been doing everything right since RAW moved to Netflix.” That means further expansion is a no-brainer. But in Japan, both entertainment giants have a special opportunity to choose from. There is a well-developed pro wrestling culture in Japan, as opposed to other emerging markets. The attendees there have decades of past history and a lot of other promotions to select from.

Japan Presents Unique Wrestling Culture

So WWE doesn’t just bring wrestling to an entirely new group of fans. Rather, it is directly pitted against viewers’ awareness of the product in a country where the product is well understood. This is more than just a service change; it’s about a fundamental shift in mindset. WWE is making the process of watching its programming a lot easier all over the world. In the meantime, Netflix provides the company with an amazing opportunity to get their most significant weekly releases in the hands of “brownie” viewers by making them available on its platform.
